Superstition Mountains at Sunrise
Superstition Mountains at Sunrise

Hi Lamont, I saw your Tiktok and wanted to share a weird experience my dad and I had in the Superstition Mountains.

I'm unsure what to make of this, but in March this year, my dad and I hiked through the Superstition Mountains. I don't know where we were hiking, but we got glimpses of Weevers Needle. I think we hiked at least seven miles. We started hiking around 4:00 am. My dad and I planned to hike to an old ranch and catch the sunrise at the summit.

Very early on in our hike, we heard people. We didn't see any other cars but assumed that if we were crazy enough to hike at 4:00 am, so were other people. I became very unsettled by the chatter, it was consistent like these people were walking right next to us. I mentioned this to my dad, but he said they were walking ahead of us and that he could see them.

It was 10 minutes of this chatter before I finally told my dad to stop, and we just listened. It was at that time the voices slowed. It was dark and silent, and the hairs on my arms stood up. A green glow appeared off a rock just ahead of us. My dad said that it was the group ahead of us. I was relieved that I knew I was freaking myself out. We kept hiking, and the green light glared off the rock. My dad just randomly said, "Interesting." As we got close, we could hear chatter. This chatter was much deeper, it didn't make any sense, it was random chattering noises if that makes any sense. That's the best way I can describe it.

My dad wasn't saying much. I asked if we could go off trail and hike a small summit next to us for sunrise. My dad seemed on edge. He said we could make it to the summit we planned on hiking before sunrise, and we would pass the group soon. I don't know what came over me. I hiked ahead of my dad; I just got annoyed with the fear and wanted to prove to myself it was people, and I was freaking out for no reason.

I got far enough ahead of my dad before he shouted for me to hold up. As soon as he shouted, a bush shook so loud right before me that I slightly jumped. I shouted to my dad that there was an animal or something. I then noticed the green light seemed brighter. I didn't see any direct light source; it was just a green glow lighting the cliff up. I stood there waiting for my dad. As my dad caught up, I had my back turned to the green light. My dad was about to say something right before a huge bang happened. We both just stood there in shock. It was like an explosion. My dad started looking up, saying there may be a rockslide or something falling. I started looking within the canyon before another loud bang echoed through the hills. We both looked at the green light. We didn't say anything. It was silent. We watched as the green light now pulsated on the rocks. It seemed much brighter now. There was another loud bang. It sounded like the loudest one. We watched, still silent, as the green light slowly faded away.

My dad suggested we climb the summit next to us to view the area better. He said we should wait to see if there were any more unexpected rockslides. I asked him what the green light was and what he thought the sounds were. He told me it was just a rock slide and people with a lantern. The more I pushed it on him, the more he brushed it off and agreed that it was spooky.

We ended up staying in that area for sunrise. We found the cabin and got back home around 3:00 pm. I looked online to see if anyone reported similar things, and it didn't feel normal. I found Reddit posts and forums about seeing green lights and hearing chanting and loud noises in the Superstition Mountains. Once I started getting into these stories, I wanted to believe I was spooking myself. I still can't think of a reasonable explanation. We never did see people ahead of us. There was no evidence of rock slides when we hiked. I have been hiking since then and have camped in the Superstition Wilderness. I haven't experienced anything else like it since. Like I said, I'm not sure what to make of it.

I emailed Jake and asked if he had photos, videos, and a location where this took place.

Hi Lamont, the revisions are okay. I do not have much information on where this took place. Over Christmas break, I brought this back up with my dad. He said we were hiking through Box Canyon. We were hiking a bit off-trail, so it was between Box Canyon and Needle Canyon. I do not have any videos. You couldn't see anything on the iPhone because it was so dark, not even the green light. The light seemed so bright, but nothing showed up on the camera. I know my dad has pictures of us and might have some of the canyons. I will send those over if he has them. It would be cool if you could find the location of the exact place where this happened. I really don't understand how we don't know the exact spot.
